The Secret to a Quiet Mind

In a quiet valley surrounded by mountains, a young monk once approached his teacher with frustration in his heart.

“Master,” he said, “I have been meditating for years, yet my mind is still full of noise. Thoughts come and go like a storm. When will I finally find peace?”

The old teacher did not answer. Instead, he handed the monk a bowl and asked him to walk to the river.

When they reached the water, the teacher said, “Fill the bowl.”

The monk dipped the bowl into the river. The water rippled and mud swirled everywhere.

“Now wait,” the teacher said.

They sat silently beside the river. Minutes passed. Slowly, the mud sank and the water in the bowl became clear.

The teacher then asked, “Did you clear the water?”

“No, master,” the monk replied. “I only stopped disturbing it.”

The teacher smiled gently.

“Your mind is the same. Peace does not come from forcing the water to be still. It comes when you stop stirring it with grasping, resisting, and judging.”

The monk looked into the bowl again. The surface reflected the mountains, the sky, and even his own face.

In that moment he understood: The mind does not become clear by fighting thoughts. It becomes clear when we stop clinging to them.

Sometimes the path is not about doing more. It is about learning to be still. 🌿
